Portsmouth Square

Located in Chinatown, Portsmouth Square is one of SF’s most significant historic, cultural, and civic spaces. The historic park serves as the densest community in the United States west of the Hudson River. SWA, contracted by SF Rec and Park, turned to SPEC to bring their vision of a fully custom playground to life. Inspired by the discovery of gold, SWA is working exclusively with SPEC to transform the idea of “Gold Mountain” from concept to reality. The playground design will serve as both a community gathering space and a sculptural, playful maze for children to experience risk, failure and mastery while honoring the historical Heart of Chinatown. Construction is expected to begin by the Summer of 2023, with completion by 2025.
